MIAMI, Fla. – Miami Hurricanes football head coach Mario Cristobal announced on Monday morning that wide receiver Cam Vaughn has been dismissed from the team via The Joe Rose Show.
The redshirt junior transferred to the Coral Gables program this spring following a productive season at West Virginia. He caught 35 passes for 541 yards and scored four touchdowns in 12 games. Vaughn is officially the fourth roster departure ahead of the upcoming college football season, along with safety Conrad Hussey, cornerback Jontavius Wyman, and five-star edge rusher Hayden Lowe.
Vaughn was projected to play a rotational role with the Hurricanes’ revamped wide receiver core.
The Temple, Georgia, native was an unranked recruit from the 2023 high school graduating class. He attended Temple High School, but played at quarterback. Vaughn completed 207 of 401 passes (51.6 percent) and threw for 3,369 yards and 25 touchdowns, including 15 interceptions, in 28 total games, according to MaxPreps.
Despite not landing any Power Four offers, Vaughn started his collegiate career at Jacksonville State. Before the 2023 college football season, he moved from quarterback to wide receiver. Vaughn only appeared in three games and redshirted to preserve NCAA eligibility. The following year, he was a consistent rotational player.
In the 2024 season, Vaughn led the Gamecocks with 48 receptions for 803 yards and scored five touchdowns in 14 games (eight starts). He earned Conference USA All-Freshman honors.
Afterwards, Vaughn competed in the Big 12, then moved to Miami, but won’t get the chance to play a snap in “The U’s” uniform. Cristobal didn’t go into details as to what exactly occurred behind the scenes. Despite the loss, the Hurricanes have plenty of depth at wide receiver.
Joshua Moore and Daylyn Upshaw are both home-grown products and sophomores looking to take on more responsibilities. Redshirt junior Vandrevius Jacobs transferred to Miami after a career-best, explosive season at South Carolina. He caught 32 passes for 548 yards. Jacobs scored four touchdowns with a 52-yard average.
Plus, it’s an opportunity for freshmen, such as Somourian Wingo and Vance Spafford, to climb the depth chart.
Vaughn was present throughout fall camp up until the announcement. He hasn’t shared yet what the next step is for him.
The Hurricanes are a couple of weeks away from kicking off the season in California against Stanford. Despite the loss, the team is still viewed as a National Championship contender and the favorites to win the Atlantic Coast Conference.
