The Canes’ late-season rivalry game just got pushed to a date it already should have been on.
The Miami Hurricanes took the college football world by storm in 2025, making it all the way to the program’s first national championship game in over 20 years.
The Canes are among a handful of teams in contention to make another run at the title in 2026, and they’re well equipped to do it. Sophomore WR Malachi Toney is set to continue his ascent to the top of the college football totem pole with the help of Duke transfer QB Darian Mensah. Bruising RB Mark Fletcher, Jr. is back, and the Canes’ defense should be good again in year two under defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman.
The Canes found themselves on a number of primetime games when their schedule was released in January, as one would expect. However, FOUR of those games were Thursday and Friday night games, which is a staggering number.
Fortunately, on Friday, one of those was moved to a Saturday slot. The Canes’ late-season home clash with Virginia Tech was moved from Friday, Nov. 20 to Saturday, Nov. 21.
Miami vs. Virginia Tech game moved from Friday, Nov. 20 to Saturday, Nov. 21, reducing Canes’ non-Saturday games to three
The Hurricanes start the season on the road with a Friday night game at Stanford on September 4. They return home to play Florida A&M on a short week on a Thursday night game. The following week, they play again on the road in ACC play at Wake Forest on a Friday night. Three straight non-Friday games to start the season.
Every now and then, you have a top 10 team on a Thursday or Friday night on ESPN to help generate viewers. Miami and Louisville played on Friday night last season, with the Cardinals upsetting the Hurricanes 24-21. However, no team should be asked to play four games on non-Saturday dates during the season.
Fortunately, the rivalry game between the Hokies and Hurricanes is going back to Saturday this year. At least sensibility ultimately prevailed.
