MIAMI, Fla. – A new college football season approaches and the Miami Hurricanes will begin another National Championship chase. The journey starts with winning the Atlantic Coast Conference for the first time in program history. Given the offseason roster ramifications, including Duke transfer Darian Mensah, delivering hardware is within the realm of possibility.
Several high school recruits will have the opportunity to watch the Hurricanes in action at Hard Rock Stadium, including Cyion Smith. He’s a four-star safety who currently attends Blountstown High School – a public institution located in Calhoun County. Smith is a 2028 graduate and has an athletic background in playing both football and basketball.
In two seasons on the field, the top-250 prospect has logged 114 total tackles, 70 solos and 44 assists, five tackles for loss, 12 passes defended, and 11 interceptions for 156 yards, including a pick-six in 25 total games, according to MaxPreps.
Smith has received several Power Four scholarships, including from Florida, Auburn, Florida State, Michigan, Ole Miss, Oregon, and Miami. He’s already made a couple of unofficial visits to the Gainesville campus.
According to 247Sports State of Florida recruiting reporter Zach Blostein, Smith is crystal-balled to sign with the Gators. However, the Hurricanes have proven to be a great competitor to the in-state rival.
Smith is scheduled to watch Mario Cristobal and the team face the Florida State Seminoles on Oct. 17. He will watch several other suitors in action:
– South Florida (Sept. 5) vs. FIU
– Louisville (Sept. 19) vs. SMU
– Auburn (Oct. 24) – a couple of days before facing Vanderbilt
– Florida (Nov. 7) vs. Oklahoma
– Oregon (Nov. 14) vs. Michigan
– Michigan (Nov. 21) vs. UCLA
The Hurricanes will be favored over the Seminoles. Fans are encouraged to wear orange for the in-state rivalry matchup and rally towels will be given away for the whole stadium.
Smith is listed at 6-3 and 160 pounds – ranked 245th nationally, 19th among safeties, and 31st in the state of Florida, according to 247Sports Composite. He’s a hard-nosed defensive back who doesn’t shy from making very physical tackles. Although Smith is listed as a safety, the Sunshine State prospect has played snaps at cornerback as a sophomore.
The Hurricanes have emerged as a defensive powerhouse, especially upon Corey Hetherman’s arrival ahead of last season. He established a new philosophy of resilience, physicality, and “violence.” It could play a role in Smith pledging for “The U,” but a decision will likely take time.
