The No. 10 seed Miami Hurricanes face the No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic on New Year’s Eve, the first of four College Football Playoff quarterfinals.
While they work toward a national championship, the Hurricanes are also navigating the college football transfer portal. It opens on Jan. 2, with On3 reporting that nearly 1,100 players are already set to enter.
Miami has already brought in the nation’s No. 8 recruiting class but is also expected to be active in the portal. It provides an opportunity to land talent that already has experience at the collegiate level. While the portal still isn’t officially open, the Hurricanes have been connected to several top players.
On3’s Pete Nakos reports that Miami is one of the programs linked to South Florida Bulls quarterback Byrum Brown. He’s currently ranked as the No. 3 quarterback set to hit the transfer portal.
“The clear early school to watch for Byrum Brown is Auburn, where his former USF head coach, Alex Golesh, landed in the coaching carousel,” Nakos wrote. “Brown is one of the most experienced quarterbacks on the market. Sources have also mentioned Miami as another school of note.”
This season for the Bulls, he completed 226-of-341 passes for 3,158 yards, 28 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also rushed for 1,008 yards and 14 touchdowns on 175 carries. Brown will command a hefty price tag, with On3 giving him an NIL valuation of $1.6 million.
Miami’s current quarterback, Carson Beck, is playing out his last year of eligibility. If the Hurricanes do land Brown, he could be the immediate replacement.
With one more year of eligibility, though, he wouldn’t be a long-term solution.
