Miami vs Texas A&M Prediction: CFP First Round Preview

There’s pressure on everyone in the College Football Playoff, but 10-seed Miami and 7-seed Texas A&M have a special level of weight on their respective shoulders.

Only one school will come out of this 12-team field truly happy, but for these two, this one game will define the narrative of the season.

Texas A&M was 11-0. It had an SEC Championship appearance right there for the taking, but it lost to Texas, and it wasn’t particularly close.

Win, and all is forgotten. The college football program that does the least with the most will finally start making a move into true powerhouse territory.

Lose, and it’ll be the team that didn’t play Georgia, Ole Miss, Alabama, or Oklahoma, and lost to Texas. It’ll be the team that failed two of its three biggest tests, but it did beat Notre Dame.

Miami beat the Irish, too, and if you forgot, ESPN, the ACC Network, and others were more than happy to let you know every five minutes like clockwork in the final days leading up to the final CFP rankings.

The Canes have the NFL talent and starting 22 to win the national title. They didn’t always play like it – with braincramp losses to meh Louisville and SMU teams – but it’s all there to go on a run. Scream all you want, but this really is one of the 12 best teams in college football this year.

And yeah, they did beat Notre Dame in the head-to-head matchup.

Win, and all will be justified and correct. Lose, and the College Football Playoff committee’s bizarre twisting of criteria and rationale – really, BYU was bad in its conference championship, but Alabama was fine? – will look really bad.

No pressure. Just win the best first round matchup of the 2025-2026 College Football Playoff.

Why Miami Will Win

Seriously, the talent is there to go on a four-game run and win the national title.

Edge rusher Rueben Bain might be the best player in the 2026 NFL Draft, if it’s not offensive tackle Francis Mauigoa. Wide receiver Malachi Toney has the potential to be the best player in college football over the next few seasons.

Keionte Scott will be a starting NFL corner for the next several years (he’s been hurt, though, and is questionable for this). Carson Beck – really – will be an NFL starter. So will defensive lineman Akheem Mesidor, and on and on and on.

The Miami lines can more than hold up against the Texas A&M lines, and it starts with the pass protection. Keep Beck clean, give him time, and the Hurricane receiving corps will take care of the rest.

So where did it go wrong this year? Louisville completely messed up Beck, who threw four interceptions and still almost pulled off the win.

He threw two more against SMU in the overtime loss, too, but for the most part, turnovers aren’t an issue for the Canes – they only lost one fumble all year.

Texas A&M might have a devastating defense, but it just does … not … take the ball away.

It only forced nine takeaways all year, with a mere three in the final seven games. Meanwhile, the offense lost the ball 11 times over the last five games. However …

The Miami offensive line is fantastic, but keeping the Texas A&M defensive front out of the backfield isn’t so easy.

The Hurricanes, outside of their own practices, haven’t seen anything like the rested Aggie defensive front is about to bring for the No. 1 defense in the nation on third downs. Get to Beck, make him hurry, and bad things will happen.

The Aggies have to lean on their own great offensive front. It might not have the star power of the Miami front five, but it’s fantastic when it gets into a groove.

There were problems in the close call against South Carolina, and it struggled a bit against Notre Dame, but the ground game worked against everyone else.

Miami’s run defense was among the best in the nation, but it didn’t face too many teams that could bash away – and Notre Dame screwed up the opener by not letting CJ Carr throw early on to open things up.

Texas A&M has to mix it up, and Marcel Reed has to be red hot out of the gate. The line has to be physical from the start, but when Miami had issues this year, it was when the other quarterback was hitting passes.

Whose lines will win?

Both teams are loaded, both are better than their seeding, and both have the coaching and playmakers to take over the game for stretches.

Both teams can get to the quarterback, and both can fly all over the field. However …

Texas couldn’t run on anyone. It ran on Texas A&M.

The defenses will hold up in key spots and force plenty of field goals, and neither side will take too many chances. Both teams will want to control the clock, keep the mistakes to a minimum, and only open it up once in a while just to throw a curveball.

Here’s the other funky thing – it’s an early kickoff. The A&M crowd will be jacked, but it should be just a wee bit different than it would’ve been if this were a primetime kickoff – which it totally should’ve been, but the Bears and Packers will command too much attention.

It’ll come down to one third down pass to seal the win, and Beck will throw it.
