Utah made a strong impression on 2028 defensive back Micah Hannah during his visit to Salt Lake City this past weekend for the Utes’ matchup against Kansas.

The 6-foot-2, 175-pound prospect out of Simi Valley High School in California was among a loaded group of recruits in attendance at Rice-Eccles Stadium on Saturday.

For Hannah, the atmosphere inside the stadium was one of the biggest takeaways from his visit.

“My time was great. The hospitality was nice and welcoming. What stood out the most was the crowd and how much support the players get,” Hannah told me.

“The whole stadium was packed and loud. Made it real challenging for the visiting teams to focus. It might have been the best game atmosphere I have been to so far.”

Hannah also had the opportunity to spend time with Utah defensive backs coach Sharrieff Shah, who offered some advice about what to look for as he continues navigating the recruiting process.

“He was telling me how to really pay attention to the coaches during the process,” Hannah said. “He’s glad I’m making my trips but also notice how he coaches. When a player makes a mistake does he get down on him and yell or does he help him and still support and encourage him during the game.”

Beyond his conversations with Shah, Hannah paid close attention to Utah’s defensive backs throughout the game.

One thing that stood out was the group’s ability to respond after difficult plays and continue competing.

“What stood out about their DBs was the way they were able to bounce back after adversity,” Hannah said. “Even after they get beat or make a bad play they know how to come back and lock back in. It’s a great mindset to have as a DB. You can’t get in your own head and take yourself out of the game.”

Hannah continues to draw recruiting interest from several programs across the West, including UCLA, Arizona, Arizona State, USC, Washington, Notre Dame and more.

However, following his weekend in Salt Lake City, Utah has positioned itself well in his recruitment.

“Utah is high on the list and is competing well after this trip,” Hannah said.

For the 2028 defensive back, the visit provided an opportunity to experience Utah’s game-day environment, spend time with the coaching staff and get a closer look at the program’s defensive backs.

And based on his comments following the trip, the Utes have made themselves a serious contender in his recruitment.
