Michigan sports have been a raging success on the field and court in recent years, winning a national title in football after the 2023 season and taking home the national title in basketball in 2025-26. Off the field or the court, they have been in the news plenty for unwanted reasons.
First, it was the sign-stealing scandal featuring Connor Stallions that eventually drove Jim Harbaugh away. More recently, Sherrone Moore’s inappropriate relationship with a staffer that got him fired and eventually arrested stole headlines. Athletic director Warde Manuel has overseen the athletic department for all of that, and now his future is in question.
On Monday, it was reported that Manuel’s future was in question as an internal investigation into the athletic department neared its conclusion. However, his comment on the matter makes it seem like he isn’t planning on going anywhere, via Ross Dellenger of Yahoo! Sports.

“The president and I have had several great conversations over the past couple of days,” Manuel said. “There are no plans for me not to continue to be the athletic director for the near future.”
Manuel has been in the public eye a lot recently. He served as the chair of the CFP selection committee during the 2024 season, along with constantly being watched as a result of these investigations.
The Wolverines have also had a number of high-profile coaching searches recently. Moore was hired after Harbaugh left following that national title run in football. Then, when Moore was fired, Michigan had a long coaching search that resulted in Utah’s Kyle Whittingham being hired as the new head coach of the football program.
On the basketball side, Michigan recently had to promote assistant coach Mike Boynton to be the new head coach after Dusty May stunningly left to be the new head coach of the Dallas Mavericks.
With the program going through so much change this summer, stability is a must for the Wolverines. We’ll find out if Manuel will be around to provide it when a final decision is made on his future later this week.
