Michigan captain Max Bredeson in walking boot after injury vs Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, MD. − The heart and soul of Michigan football might not be available against Ohio State.

Max Bredeson, a two-time captain and the leader of the Wolverines, left the game with an apparent lower-body injury in the first half against Maryland. He did not immediately return to the sideline after halftime and when he did, he had a boot on his foot and crutches in his hand.

After the game, Michigan was coy about the injuries, saying just that Bredeson will "get further evaluation as we get home and see what happens."

Michigan Wolverines tight end Max Bredeson (44) runs by Maryland Terrapins defensive back La'Khi Roland (27) after a first half catch at SECU Stadium in College Park, Maryland on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2025.

It's yet another blow for a Michigan offense that entered the game without its top two rushing options in Justice Haynes (foot) and Jordan Marshall (shoulder). Coaches have raved about what Bredeson, who began his career as a walk-on, has meant to the program.

"Off the field, on the field, he's the prototypical leader, person, student, athlete, everything that you want a football player," coach Sherrone Moore said last month. "If you had 11 Max Bredesons you'd probably go undefeated every year for your whole coaching career, because he is everything you want … the dude is just unbelievable."

His stats are pedestrian at best with just two receptions for 11 yards on the year, but what he does for the team is tough to quantify. He serves as the lead blocker in the run game and is the tone-setter for the offense. Back in fall camp, Bredeson asked coaches if he could room with quarterback Bryce Underwood to serve as a mentor as the true freshman entered his initial college campaign.

“I don’t know exactly what I was trying to get out of it, but I just knew it could help the team,” Bredeson said in August.

Bredeson, now a fifth-year senior, has won three Big Ten championships, a Rose Bowl, a national championship and has a combined 8-1 record over rivals Michigan State and Ohio State.
