Michigan Captain Takes Snaps at New Position Prior to Maryland Game

Key Points:

  • Max Bredeson is one of six Michigan captains
  • He began working at a new position this week
  • The Wolverines have Maryland and Ohio State next

The Michigan Wolverines have a challenging two-game slate left this season with Maryland on the road in College Park this weekend and #1 Ohio State coming to Ann Arbor the following week.

The Wolverines’ offense has been drastically better this season under new offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey, excelling in both the passing and running games at various points.

On Wednesday, news broke that a Michigan team captain is trying his hand at a new position heading into this weekend’s action in hopes of bolstering running back depth with Justice Haynes out for the season.

Bredeson Works at New Position

Michigan fullback Max Bredeson returned to campus this season in hopes of removing the bad taste in his mouth from the Wolverines’ 7-5 2024 camapign.

So far the team captain has made his impact felt, becoming starting quarterback Bryce Underwood’s roommate and paving the way for him and other ballcarriers with crushing block after crushing block.

Bredeson is working at running back according to Wolverines reporter Alejandro Zuniga.

“He’s getting opportunities to play at tailback now,” tight ends coach and co-offensive coordinator Steve Casola said according to Zuniga.

“And that’s not about because of what we don’t have – it’s because of what we do have in him. He’s one of a kind.”

Michigan’s Running Game Among Nation’s Best

Michigan football’s running game ranks 12th in the nation with 223 yards per game on average, one spot ahead of the nation’s second-ranked team Indiana and firmly ahead of the Ohio State Buckeyes, who are averaging just over 160 yards per game on the ground.

The loss of Haynes, a Heisman contender, has been softened by the strong running of Jordan Marshall, a former Mr. Ohio award winner, and Bredeson, who has picked up where he left off from last year as one of the nation’s best blockers.

Bredeson has the speed and football IQ to carry the ball in short yardage and goal line situations, and he may be in line for touches as a trick play artist similar to departed Wolverines bruiser Kalel Mullings.

With Ohio State on the schedule next week, the feeling is that Lindsey and his staff are doing everything in their power to make the Buckeyes honor every aspect of their offense, in hopes of keeping them on their toes by the time Nov. 29 rolls around in Ann Arbor.
