As announced by Portage High School’s athletic department Monday, January 12, the Indians are hiring former Michigan City head football coach Cody French as their new head football coach.

Portage, a Duneland Conference rival that the Wolves beat 43-3 last season, went 0-10 in 2025 under interim head coach Tony Klimczak. Michigan City finished 8-4 with an IHSAA Class 5A sectional championship.

French went 17-16 in his three seasons leading Michigan City, helping bring the program its first sectional title since 2021. In five seasons as an Indiana high school football head coach at Michigan City and Calumet, a French-led team has only finished with a losing record once.

The Wolves will be searching for their eighth head coach this century and their third within the last decade. French is Portage’s ninth head coach this century and its fifth within the last decade.

While Portage is a 6A football program, the Indians have not won a sectional crown since 2003 and have not had a winning record since 2016.
