The Michigan Wolverines are scrambling for answers following back-to-back losses to the Iowa Hawkeyes and Minnesota Gophers in the first season of the Kyle Whiittinghma era in Ann Arbor.
Whittingham was brought in to stabilize a program that has been plagued by scandals in recent seasons, and although the program seems to have ironed out its culture issues in his first year at the helm, the on-field product has left a lot to be desired.
Many fans and analysts have called out the play of starting quarterback Bryce Underwood, who has largely failed to meet expectations in his two seasons as the program’s starter.
“I think it’s time to sit him down. I think if I was involved in that decision, I think I would say it’s best for Bryce. He needs to watch it from the sideline and see if he can grow and learn more about what’s happening on the other side of the ball. And for the football team and the fanbase, I think they need to see a change,” CBS analyst Rick Neuheisel said earlier this month.
“And for Jason Beck, the new offensive coordinator who came along with Kyle Whittingham, I think it gives him a chance to start building something else. Because right now, it is not working. Square peg, round hole sort of thing.”
Whittingham himself acknowledged that nobody’s job as the starting quarterback was promised.
“He’s our QB right now. It’s not something that’s infinite,” Whittingham said.
Following Michigan’s losses and coming out of the bye week, Whittingham announced his decision on the position heading into Penn State week for the Wolverines.
For now, the coach is asserting that Underwood is “still our guy,” although backup quarterback Tommy Carr received half of the reps with the 1s during practice.
Kyle Whittingham says Michigan took a step back against Minnesota, and has to tailor the offense better and fix the turnover margin.

Whittnhim added that, somewhat shockingly given his results thus far, he feels Underwood gives Michigan “the best chance to win,” but it’s clear that the former 5-star recruit’s leash is shorter than ever. If he struggles on Saturday against the Nittany Lions, fans shouldn’t be surprised if they see Carr trotting out onto the field.
