Taking the stage for his first Big Ten Media Days as head coach of the Michigan Wolverines, Kyle Whittingham expressed deep appreciation for taking over one of the most storied brands in college sports.
"Excited to be at Michigan. What a place. University that really has it all. You talk about resources, academics, tradition, history, the whole nine yards," Whittingham said.
Reflecting on his first seven months in Ann Arbor, Whittingham praised the seamless transition into spring and summer conditioning, while assembling a top-tier coaching staff featuring offensive coordinator Jason Beck, defensive coordinator Jay Hill, and special teams coordinator Kerry Coombs.
Whittingham addressed the intense scrutiny surrounding the program, acknowledging the historical drama of recent years while expressing hope that the team can move past it.
"There has been a lot of drama, as I mentioned before. We hope that we've come to the end of that and we're ready to proceed just with the business of playing football and winning football games and graduating players," Whittingham noted.
A major focal point for the Wolverines is the development of sophomore quarterback Bryce Underwood.

Reflecting on Underwood's baptism by fire as a true freshman starter who won nine games under immense pressure, Whittingham remarked, "His work ethic is second to none. He wants to be great as badly as any player I've ever been around… He has a very high ceiling. I think he's going to turn out to be a very successful quarterback at Michigan".
Weighing in on macro-level roster economics, Whittingham did not shy away from expressing concerns over the unsustainable financial trajectory of name, image, and likeness spending. Voicing support for Lane Kiffin's conceptual proposals,
Whittingham advocated for a salary cap and an NFL minor league structural model to bring guardrails to college athletics. Looking toward the grueling realities of conference play, Whittingham emphasized foundational football philosophy: stopping the run defensively and establishing a punishing ground game offensively. With quiet confidence and veteran leadership at the helm, Whittingham and the Wolverines are fully focused on letting their play on the field speak for itself.
