At this point last week, Michigan football wasn't just a laughingstock; it was at the center of controversy. With the clock controversy coming out of Week 1, the Wolverines were 1-0, but considered by many to be not just fraudulent, but the actual loser of the game against Western Michigan.
What a difference a week makes.
After seven days of pundits proclaiming that Michigan football was set to be blown out by Oklahoma in The Big House, it was the Wolverines who emerged as the victors. And, as a result, they're even making some top 10 lists.
Yahoo Sports put out its post-Week 2 top 10 list, and the maize and blue managed to slide in, just making the cut, coming in at No. 10.
This week: beat Oklahoma 17-10
Next week: vs. UTEP
Things aren't all rosy in Ann Arbor just because the Wolverines are 2-0. We know the clock snafu against Western Michigan counts as a loss in many people's minds, and Saturday against Oklahoma was anything but convincing. Whittingham's team has plenty to iron out on offense, but the defense has allowed one touchdown in two games and that's pretty salty. Michigan's first two opponents were both held under 300 yards of offense.
Yes, all of the caveats come into play here with the Western Michigan of it all. And though there are still caveats here that Oklahoma looked far from impressive, credit that Michigan is in the top 10, regardless.
Though the latter has been something of the disclaimer from those who wish to denounce and discredit the Wolverines, of course the maize and blue had a little something to do with making John Mateer and the Sooners look pedestrian, at best. OU looked fantastic against UTEP in Week 1, which will actually be Michigan's Week 3 opponent.
Perhaps that will be a full get-right game where Kyle Whittingham's team flexes and looks the part of a top team after two tough weeks. We'll know more at 3:30 p.m. EDT when the Wolverines and Miners kick off.
