Michigan Dealt Unfortunate Coaching News On Sunday

Michigan Wolverines‘ coaching situation remains unsettled after Sherrone Moore’s abrupt firing and arrest in December. The program is scrambling to steady itself before the transfer portal opens on Jan. 2. School athletic leaders want a new coach quickly, with reports saying the school aims to hire by Christmas. Interim coach Biff Poggi has tried to steady the locker room. “The kids quite honestly feel very betrayed,” Poggi said, per CBS Sports.

Chip Lindsey is the latest staffer to leave. Lindsey, Michigan’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach this season, has been hired by the Missouri Tigers as their next offensive coordinator. He spent just one season in Ann Arbor.

Steve Casula will call plays in the Dec. 31 Citrus Bowl against the Texas Longhorns. Lindsey’s résumé includes stops with the North Carolina Tar Heels, UCF Knights and Troy Trojans, where he was head coach. He coached Drake Maye at UNC and was brought to Michigan to develop a young quarterback room.

Michigan’s offense under Lindsey had mixed results. The Wolverines averaged 185.8 passing yards per game, ranking 105th nationally. Freshman Bryce Underwood finished the regular season with nine passing touchdowns. Michigan leaned on its run game, which ranked 15th in the nation.

The search for a permanent coach has drawn big names. Brian Kelly has shown interest and remains a notable option, according to BVM Sports. Kelly’s career record stands at 297-109-2, including his long tenure at Division II Grand Valley State. Michigan faces a late hiring cycle.

Other names have surfaced. Some sources and prediction sites showed Kyle Whittingham of the Utah Utes and Jedd Fisch of the Washington Huskies among the top possibilities, with Whittingham garnering notable attention. Some candidates have publicly removed themselves. Kalen DeBoer said to Detroit Free Press: “I have not spoken and have no interest in speaking with anyone else.” Kenny Dillingham signed an extension with the Arizona State Sun Devils, further narrowing the list.
