Michigan Football 2026 Schedule: Full Breakdown and Season Outlook

If Kyle Whittingham wanted a challenge when he took on the Michigan head coaching job, he’s getting it with the 2026 football schedule.

It’s Michigan, it’s supposed to beat everyone, but last year it beat everyone it was supposed to, and lost the four games against better teams – Oklahoma, USC, Ohio State, and Texas; but that date with the Longhorns comes with a decent excuse.

This year? Welcome back to the slate Oregon, and Iowa, and Penn State. Oh yeah, and welcome back, Indiana, and the home part of the home-and-home against Oklahoma.

Breaking Down Michigan’s 2026 Football Schedule

The Good

Considering Michigan almost never loses to Minnesota, it’s a sweet deal that it’s only home game until Halloween. Six of the first seven are in Ann Arbor, and there aren’t two road games in a row. However …

The Bad

Yeah, there are all those home games early, but they include Indiana, Oklahoma, Iowa, and Penn State.

And that’s the good news. The bad? At Oregon, and at Ohio State.

What Big Ten Teams Michigan Will Miss

Illinois, Maryland, Nebraska, Northwestern, Purdue, USC, Washington, Wisconsin.

Of course, the Wolverines aren’t going to miss Ohio State, but to have to play Indiana and Oregon, too, is a problem.

The bigger issue? Not playing Maryland, Nebraska, Northwestern, Purdue, or Wisconsin. The Wolverines would’ve been favored against all five.

Michigan’s Best and Worst Case Scenarios in 2026

Best Case: Don’t lose in Ann Arbor

The rivalry game against Michigan State and the date with a should-be-resurgent UCLA are almost afterthoughts.

Again, there are a whole slew of nasty home games, but the Wolverines get by all of the tough early games – making a huge statement against Indiana – and have no issues with Minnesota or Rutgers on the road.

At 9-0, the Oregon and Ohio State road games don’t really matter – you know what I mean – with Michigan all but locked into the College Football Playoff.

Worst Case: The Wolverines start 7-2

Or worse.

Michigan loses to Indiana and drops the dates against Oklahoma, Iowa, and/or Penn State, and that’s pretty much it. It not only loses at Oregon, but it also goes through the pain and suffering of losing at home to Michigan State.

And, of course, it loses at Ohio State, just to twist the knife a little more.

Michigan Football 2026 Schedule

Sept 5 Western Michigan
Sept 12 Oklahoma
Sept 19 UTEP
Sept 26 Iowa
Oct 3 at Minnesota
Oct 10 OPEN DATE
Oct 17 Penn State
Oct 24 Indiana
Oct 31 at Rutgers
Nov 7 Michigan State
Nov 14 at Oregon
Nov 21 UCLA
Nov 28 at Ohio State

Games That Will Decide Michigan’s Season

1. at Ohio State, Nov. 28
Time to take back the best rivalry in sports.

2. Indiana, Oct. 24
Michigan actually gave the Hoosiers a hard time in 2024, and the two didn’t play last season. Win this, and at that point, nothing less than the College Football Playoff will do.

3. Oklahoma, Sept. 12
Michigan lost to the Sooners 14-6 in the 1976 Orange Bowl, and dropped last year’s date in Norman 24-13. You want to get the Kyle Whittingham era going? Win this.
