Michigan football hired Kyle Whittingham to help restore the program’s ailing reputation following a period of scandals and rules violations, and while family values and respect can certainly have a positive effect, contending for a Big Ten title will probably do the trick as well. The Wolverines, like any athletics institution tarnished by controversy or disorder, can assuage public backlash by winning games. Unfortunately, that is just how this industry works. But the focus cannot be only on 2026. Michigan is eyeing sustained success, and that begins on the recruiting trail.
Whittingham and the Wolverines have secured a commitment from three-star linebacker Brayden Watson, according to Hayes Fawcett of Rivals and On3. The 6-foot-3, 215-pounder out of Buford, Georgia chose Michigan over Vanderbilt, Pittsburgh and Mississippi State. He is the No. 69-ranked player at his position in the 2027 class.
Following this addition, the team is just outside the top-10 in the 2027 recruiting rankings, per Rivals. There is still plenty of work to do, but fans should be intrigued whenever the Wolverines scoop up a defensive player. Whittingham instilled an undeniable sense of toughness while leading Utah for two-plus decades, and his new employer expects him to do the same as quickly as possible.
Although Michigan celebrated a national championship just two and a half years ago, the squad’s on-field identity started to wane a bit. Ann Arbor demands physicality and punishing defense.
Kyle Whittingham is hoping to bring that back at full force next season and build a new tradition of hard-hitting Michigan football. Brayden Watson is dedicated to aiding those efforts, beginning in 2027.
