MINNEAPOLIS – Michigan football committed three straight turnovers in the second half, tanking its chance to pick up a Big Ten road win and retain the Little Brown Jug.
The No. 24 Wolverines lost to the Minnesota Golden Gophers, 20-14, on Saturday, Oct. 3, at Huntington Bank Stadium.
It's the Gophers' first home win against Michigan since 1977.
Linebacker Nathaniel Staehling made the biggest defensive play of the Wolverines' season with a 79-yard pick-six late in the second quarter for a 14-7 lead.
But Andrew Marsh muffed a punt, Bryce Underwood overthrew a receiver for a sideline interception and Underwood got hit on a throw for a second pick, leading to two field goals and a Darius Taylor (Walled Lake Western) touchdown early in the fourth.
Michigan punted twice more, the defense forced another stop, but the offense failed on one final drive from its own 13-yard line with 1:45 to play. Underwood finished 10-for-21 for 101 yards and two picks, with 20 rushing yards on 10 carries.
Michigan (3-2, 0-2 Big Ten) is on a bye next week, then returns Oct. 17 hosting Penn State in Week 7.
