Michigan has found success with welcoming in prospects who elect to serve their faith following high school before enrolling in college. The Wolverines landed 2027/2029 three-star Christian Hanshaw last week, who will begin his time with the team two-and-a-half years from now.

It’s not uncommon to find recruits out west that take mission trips, and considering the ties head coach Kyle Whittingham and his staff have in the region, there’s the understanding from the latter group about evolving and growing outside of football. Jim Harbaugh and his assistants had a very similar mindset as well.

On Monday evening, Michigan picked up a commitment from 2025/2027 three-star linebacker Weston Port, who has around six months remaining in his mission in the Canary Islands. He will arrive in Ann Arbor in January after graduating from San Juan Capistrano (Calif.) San Juan Hills High two years ago.

Port initially signed with UCLA as a senior, but announced the re-opening of his recruitment back in May. Schools like TCU, Georgia Tech, Illinois, Purdue and Northwestern were staging major pushes once Port was available, but new Michigan linebackers coach Alex Whittingham took the lead and gave the Wolverines strong contention status from the jump.

Projected as a MIKE in college, Port held considerable interest in Michigan prior to Whittingham’s arrival. When Harbaugh was at the helm, Port took multiple visits to Ann Arbor, including a game-day trip during the national championship run. He was first offered in the spring of 2022.

“Unreal,” Port told The Wolverine back in 2023. “The players, the crowd, the band, all of it. It was all amazing. It started at walkthroughs in the morning. The players and the coaches seemed upbeat and confident. They were prepared and ready. Coming out of the tunnel was pretty cool. When you walk out into that, it’s like something you see in a movie.”

The Wolverines are now up to 20 total commitments in the 2027 cycle. Port is now one-third of Michigan’s linebacker group in the class, as he joins four-star Frederrick Ford and three-star Brayden Watson.

Port finished his high school career with an astounding 442 total tackles, including 75 for a loss and 24.5 sacks. When he signed with the Bruins, the 247Sports composite ranked him as the No. 69 overall linebacker in the country and No. 49 player in California.
