While the sports world expects Michigan football quarterback Bryce Underwood to break out in the 2026 season, the position room has just received news about who will back up the sophomore star. As the Michigan football program prepares for the 2026 season, head coach Kyle Whittingham announced Underwood’s backup, as it’s one that has major ties to the school.
According to Clayton Sayfie of On3 Sports, it will be freshman Tommy Carr who will back up Underwood, as his father, Jason, played at the university and his grandfathers, Lloyd Carr and Tom Curtis, are considered “legends in the program.”
“Michigan’s backup quarterback behind Underwood will be freshman Tommy Carr, a Saline (Mich.) High school product whose father, Jason Carr, played at U-M and grandfathers, Lloyd Carr (coach) and Tom Curtis (All-American safety), are legends in the program,” Sayfie wrote.

Vast improvements made by Michigan football’s Bryce Underwood
While Carr will be waiting in the wing if Underwood gets hurt, there’s no denying that all eyes will be on the starter to vastly improve in his second season after throwing for 2,428 yards to go along with 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions.
Whittingham would emphasize the improvements made not just compared to last season, but how he’s “markedly better through fall camp than he was at any point in spring.”
“Now, there hasn’t been any live work for him,” Whittingham said. “We’ve kept the linemen away from him because you throw and fall through and hit a helmet or something like that, so we’ve been very protective of Bryce. But how he’s operated and how he’s gone through his reads, just how he’s gotten command of the offense, was way further ahead of what you saw in the spring. And how that translates when everything’s live, we’ll find out in five days.”
It remains to be seen how Underwood performs this season, as the first test will be on Saturday, Sept. 5, against Western Michigan, as the program looks to build off its 9-4 record from last season. Besides Underwood, fans will wait and see if Carr has to come in any game this season.
