With the Michigan football team taking on the Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday, it will no doubt be a huge game for sophomore quarterback Bryce Underwood, who has been under major criticism for his play. As Underwood prepares for the Week 2 matchup with the Michigan football program against the Sooners, this rival coach would speak on the biggest flaws of the player.
Speaking to The Athletic anonymously, a rival defensive backs coach who has faced Underwood would praise Underwood’s ability to be “accurate on the move,” his arm power, and overall ability, but his decision-making is what needs cleaning up.
“He’s accurate on the move,” the coach said. “He can throw it a mile. If it ever clicks, he’s got all the ability. … But right now, it’s his decision-making that’s the problem, and him identifying things, being comfortable in the scheme. If you can’t read the defense, you’re not comfortable with the offense.”

Michigan football’s Bryce Underwood-Oklahoma is “not a great matchup”
Underwood is looking to vastly improve after an underwhelming outing against Western Michigan in Week 1, despite the exhilarating finish, which had the game end in a Hail Mary attempt from the quarterback. However, with the upcoming matchup being against Oklahoma, one Big Ten defensive coach would explain how it’s a bad matchup for the signal-caller.
“Oklahoma put a lot of stuff on tape (to defend Underwood) for the playbook last year,” the coach said. “(Sooners coach Brent) Venables exposed him. Underwood struggles with all that variance that Venables loves to do. They have so much volume of stuff, and guys are getting calls in late. It’s almost like OU can be too exotic with all they’re doing, but even if they cut (a Michigan receiver) loose, I don’t know if Underwood could find him. It looks like he’s seeing ghosts. This is not a great matchup for him.”
Last season on Sept. 6, 2025, in the Wolverines’ game visiting Oklahoma, Underwood threw for 142 yards, completing nine of 24 pass attempts. He looks to change the narrative for himself and the Michigan football program with the outing on Saturday.
