Michigan has struggled out of the gate, recently losing to Minnesota 20-14, and many people are pointing fingers at Bryce Underwood. Underwood, a Detroit native, was lauded as one of the best recruits in his class and an ascendant star in college football. But he’s experienced struggles to start the season.
Underwood has thrown for 881 yards and 5 touchdowns, with 4 interceptions, and has added 212 rushing yards with two touchdowns on the ground. Saturday was one of Underwood’s roughest outings of the season, as he finished with just 101 yards on 10-of-21 attempts, no passing touchdowns, and two interceptions. He also had only 10 carries for 20 yards and no rushing touchdowns.
Underwood’s struggles could come with a financial penalty, as The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman points out.

“The ‘Underwood thing’ has hovered over Michigan football since before the No. 1 recruit in the 2025 class, a Detroit native, flipped from LSU to the Wolverines,” Feldman writes. “At 6 feet 4, 230 pounds, and blessed with a powerful arm, Underwood is a gifted athlete. He signed with Michigan after landing a four-year, $12 million deal. Sources briefed on the contract but not authorized to speak publicly told The Athletic that there is flexibility that the deal can be terminated after each year.”
Underwood, in media following the Minnesota loss, took accountability and said that the team needs to recalibrate its offensive strategy heading into the next few weeks.
“[I] just feel like we got to go back to square one and figure out where we got to fix so we can be the best team we can be in the next two weeks.”
