Michigan football recruiting for the 2027 cycle is starting to heat up, after seeing some ups and downs following the hire of new head coach Kyle Whittingham. Whittingham lost a few of the pledges, acquired more, and even saw one of his new commits back off his pledge a month later. However, the class is progressing, and with official visits starting later this month, the Wolverines are continuing to add to the group.
One target who was predicted to end up in Ann Arbor earlier this week was 2027 Indianapolis (Ind.) Franklin Central four-star edge rusher Jayce Brewer. Ranked by Rivals as the No. 214 player in the country, Brewer has offers from Ohio State, Indiana, Tennessee, Auburn, Florida, LSU, Miami, Oregon, Penn State, Texas A&M, and USC, among others. However, he ultimately pledged his commitment to the maize and blue.

Here's the scouting report from 247Sports' Andrew Ivins:
-Thick edge player that can slip blocks and create negative plays.-Young for the grade and is likely to undergo a major physical transformation in the coming years.-Spent much of junior season positioned as a 5-technique in a three-man front where he was able to generate easy push with his initial thrust.-Rather fluid in the lower half and can quickly change course.-Finds ways to split double teams.-Showcases good bend, but needs to improve overall rush package in hopes of generating more quarterback pressures.-Doubles as a tight end on offense, which speaks to the caliber of athlete.-Projects as a potential multi-year contributor at the Power Four level that can emerge as a key piece up front with further development.
Brewer is the seventh commitment for Michigan in the 2027 class. Here is everyone currently pledged to the class, using Rivals Industry Ranking:
- Kalamazoo (Mich.) Loy Norrix four-star OT Jakari Lipsey (No. 104 overall)
- Salt Lake City (Utah) West four-star QB Kamden Lopati (No. 119 overall)
- Muskegon (Mich.) four-star EDGE Recarder Kitchen (No. 134 overall)
- Indianapolis (Ind.) four-star EDGE Jayce Brewer (No. 361 overall)
- Gatineau (Quebec) Brook Hill three-star IOL Sidney Rouleau (No. 424 overall)
- Saline (Mich.) three-star IOL Louis Esposito (No. 601 overall)
- Las Vegas (Nev.) Centennial three-star S Maxwell Miles (805 overall)
Considering that Whittingham had just two pledges last year ranked ahead of most of the field (current Michigan WR Salesi Moa and Utah OL Kelvin Obot), he's taking full advantage of his new digs in Ann Arbor by procuring higher-end talent. He had the two five-stars in Moa and Obot, but otherwise, Whittingham did not have a single four-star in the 2026 Utah class.
