Michigan football: Who will be the next offensive breakout stars?

Outgoing Michigan football defensive tackle Rayshaun Benny gave his thoughts on who will be the next crop of Wolverines stars while being interviewed at the NFL scouting combine this week, and on Thursday, outgoing tight end Marlin Klein did the same.

What was interesting about Benny’s prognostication is that he picked mostly offensive players. Klein, who played on that side of the ball, of course game more of the same.

Unlike Benny, Klein didn’t circle around star quarterback Bryce Underwood (though he was mentioned), but instead highlighted two tight ends, some offensive linemen, a wide receiver, and a running back.

“For next year, I would say Hogan Hansen, Jalen Hoffman, obviously Bryce Underwood is going to do a great job,” Klein said. “I think the entire O-line is going to be good, too. Andrew Sprague, the right tackle, he’s going to be a stud. Andrew Marsh, I mean, everybody’s seen what he can do as a freshman. So who knows what he’s going to do these next two years, two to three years. And then Jordan Marshall is still one of the best running backs in the country.”

And those are just the players that Klein knows about.

The Wolverines brought in some big-time players via the transfer portal and in the 2026 recruiting class. Former Utah wideout JJ Buchanan and Texas pass catcher Jaime Ffrench figure to play prominent roles in the pass game. Former five-star running back Savion Hiter could rise up to second in rotation with a good offseason training regimen, if he can get up to speed in college football quickly. Freshman receiver Travis Johnson and athlete Salesi Moa have the ability to potentially see the field early in year one.

And with the offensive line, though he mentioned Sprague (who briefly entered the transfer portal), Jake Guarnera and Blake Frazier also figure to improve greatly after getting their first taste of college football last year.

But the mentions of Hansen (who was expected to play a starring role last year, but was injured all season) and Hoffmann (a former walk-on who was Max Bredeson’s backup at fullback) are also encouraging. They both have the ability to be threats in the pass game and could certainly help in the run game, too. With Jason Beck leading the offense, he has a lot of weapons at his disposal — it will be interesting to see how he uses them all.
