Michigan Stuns Oklahoma in Huge 17-10 Statement Win
The Michigan Wolverines just announced themselves in a big way.
After an ugly season opener against Western Michigan, Michigan responded with a massive 17-10 victory over No. 11 Oklahoma on Saturday at Michigan Stadium. The Wolverines entered the matchup with plenty of questions surrounding the offense, Bryce Underwood and new head coach Kyle Whittingham, but they answered many of them with a gritty performance against one of the nation’s top teams.
Michigan Defense Takes Over
The biggest difference in the game was Michigan’s defense.
The Wolverines held Oklahoma to just 289 total yards and forced two turnovers. Most importantly, Michigan consistently made plays when the Sooners threatened to take control.
Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer finished with 189 passing yards and a touchdown, but he also threw an interception and struggled to consistently move the ball against Michigan’s defense.
The Wolverines’ pass rush came up huge late, including a sack of Mateer inside the final minute that effectively ended Oklahoma’s comeback hopes.
Underwood Leads The Way
Bryce Underwood didn’t put up enormous passing numbers, but he made several important plays with his legs.
The sophomore quarterback completed 9 of 17 passes for 111 yards while rushing for 87 yards and a touchdown. His 38-yard touchdown run in the first quarter gave Michigan an early lead and immediately energized the Big House.
Jordan Marshall eventually delivered the decisive touchdown in the fourth quarter, giving Michigan a seven-point advantage that the Wolverines’ defense protected.
A Massive Win For Michigan
This victory means much more than simply improving Michigan’s record.
The Wolverines were coming off a shaky opening-week performance and faced serious questions heading into the matchup. Oklahoma had also defeated Michigan 24-13 last season, making Saturday’s game an opportunity for revenge.
Michigan delivered.
The Wolverines are now 2-0, while Oklahoma falls to 1-1. More importantly, Michigan has a signature victory that could completely change the conversation surrounding this team.
After everything that happened during the offseason and the concerns following Week 1, Michigan just proved it can compete with one of the nation’s best.
The Wolverines are officially back in the conversation.
