Michigan football was under a lot of scrutiny in Week 1 after a narrow and miraculous win over Western Michigan. Despite the dramatic Hail Mary that gave the Wolverines a 13-12 win over the Broncos, the vibes around the Michigan team were not great heading into a Week 2 clash with No. 11 Oklahoma.
But Kyle Whittingham’s squad defied the odds and played a wonderful first half against the Sooners, taking a 10-0 lead into the break. Bryce Underwood got the Wolverines on the board with a 38-yard touchdown run and the defense shut John Mateer and OU out. Heading into the halftime break, Whittingham stopped to chat with Jenny Taft of FOX Sports about what was going better for the Maize and Blue in the opening half.

“So far it’s been good stuff,” Whittingham said. “Playing real well on defense, they’re under 100 yards. We’re playing the run well. We’ve rushed for nearly 100 yards. Had a couple balls on the ground, fortunately we got them back. But, good first half. We’ve got more in the tank though. We’ve gotta be better.”
He then spoke about the improvements from Underwood after a brutal Week 1.
“Decision making,” he said. “Some of the run pulls he was trying to pull, but young freshman running back eager to get the ball, couldn’t pull it out of there. Bryce is playing very well.”
During the week, Whittingham talked about how Underwood’s job was not set in stone and that the former five-star recruit would have to start playing some better football in order to hang onto his job over Tommy Carr. So far in Week 2, it looks like the message has been received.
Michigan still has plenty of work to do in order to get the win over Oklahoma, which came out of the halftime break with a lot more energy and scored 10 unanswered points to tie the game. But with Underwood playing some sound, mistake-free football and a Michigan defense that is still giving Oklahoma fits, the Wolverines will try to use the raucous crowd at the Big House to get the win.
