Spring football is officially underway, and the Michigan Wolverines spring game is just a month away. We still have a long way to go before the 2026 season, but the spring game is always a welcome checkpoint during the offseason. The start of spring ball also means that we are approaching arguably the most critical time of year for recruiting. Let’s discuss the latest updates in today’s Recruiting Roundup:
Louis Esposito scheduling official visits
Louis Esposito, the son of former Michigan football defensive line coach Lou Esposito, committed to the Wolverines last July. His dad was one of the few coaches that head coach Kyle Whittingham kept on the staff, but he left to take a job with the Baltimore Ravens.
Now, the three-star offensive lineman out of Saline is exploring his options a bit more. According to a report from Rivals’ Allen Trieu ($), Esposito has unofficial visits scheduled at Iowa, Notre Dame, Penn State and USC during the spring. He will be at Michigan’s spring game on April 18, and he also locked in his official visit with the Wolverines for June.
Esposito was also in town last week for an unofficial visit, and he is expected back a few other times this spring as well, including for the aforementioned spring game. It’s unclear whether he will reopen his recruitment or not, but you have to raise an eyebrow any time a committed prospect takes visits to other schools. We’ll keep you posted on this one.
Michigan a stand out school for 2027 ATH
Michigan is in good position as of now for 2027 three-star athlete Tytan DeJong. The staff has strong connections to the Utah native, and the Wolverines are among are a group of schools standing out.
“I would say that Cal, Michigan and BYU stand out to me because of the culture they have set in each of their programs,” DeJong recently told 247Sports’ Blair Angulo ($). “Everyone is going to have the fancy bells and whistles and equipment, but it really comes down to the coaching and the culture for me and I feel like Cal, Michigan and BYU all do that very well.”
Alex Whittingham, Michigan’s new linebackers coach, is the primary recruiter for DeJong, as it appears the Wolverines want him on defense.
“I mainly talk to coach Alex Whittingham at Michigan and we have a great connection,” DeJong said. “We talk weekly. And they talk about how I can be the next great linebacker to come out of the University of Michigan. We are also talking about getting me up there for some spring practices and an official visit. I am looking at the final weekend of May, and I’d like to get out there with another guy that Michigan is recruiting hard, Peyton Higginson.”
DeJong has an official visit scheduled at BYU for the weekend of June 19, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him eventually book one for Michigan as well.
Four-star DL talks recent Michigan visit
2027 four-star defensive lineman Marvin Nguetsop was on campus on Monday, and he enjoyed his trip.
“It was good,” Nguetsop told The Michigan Insider ($). “Last year I came over here to camp and that was the first time. I was able to go work with coach Esposito and he offered me back then because he kind of saw my potential. I just came to the States, but he still saw my potential. Now, I got to meet coach Larry and we’ve been in contact since he was at Vanderbilt. I’ve been friends with him and now that he’s at Michigan, he just wanted to see me in-person here. It was great and they even had a little presentation for me about how they see myself over here at Michigan and it was just great to get re-offered by them.”
Nguetsop has been talking to new defensive line coach Larry Black since he was coaching at Vanderbilt, and getting to meet him in Ann Arbor was a big step in this recruitment for the Wolverines.
“Yes, it did for sure help seeing him here,” Nguetsop said. “We already had a good relationship built up. We’ve been texting for a while. He said he liked my film, so me being over here and seeing coach Black, it was just great because we just already knew each other.
“The atmosphere was just really great,” he continued. “I talked to a lot of coaches and they would love to have me over here. It was great. I was excited to come back because I really wanted to come over to Michigan again to build a relationship with the new coaches and get re-offered, so it went great. Michigan is definitely great. It’s going to be a school that’s going to be high on my list. We’re going to be setting an official visit in June. I’m going to be coming back here for sure. It’s always going to be a top school for me.”
