EAST LANSING — Jonathan Smith’s quarterback decision for Michigan State football’s game with Penn State proved an easy one.
Aidan Chiles is out, meaning redshirt freshman Alessio Milivojevic will get his second straight start as the Spartans host the Nittany Lions on Saturday, Nov. 15.
Chiles, who was benched for the first time in his two seasons at MSU before a 23-20 overtime loss at Minnesota on Nov. 1, was in a sweatsuit pregame and wearing a walking boot on his left foot. The junior took just one snap at the end of the first half in the loss to the Gophers.
Milivojevic, who had replaced Chiles in the four previous games before taking over, finished 20-for-28 for 311 yards, including a 71-yard touchdown pass at Minnesota. He also was sacked seven times, six in the first half. The Naperville, Illinois, native was the first MSU quarterback to eclipse 300 yards in his starting debut since Rocky Lombardi did it against Purdue in 2018 in place of an injured Brian Lewerke.
Whether Chiles will play again this season or for the Spartans is unknown. The junior, who followed Smith and his staff from Oregon State, completed 20 straight passes in a loss at No. 2 Indiana, struggled a week later against Michigan and got benched. He has thrown for 1,392 yards, 10 touchdowns and three interceptions this season, completing 63.1% of his passes.
Chiles, who started 20 straight games before his benching, also has been sacked 21 times for 197 lost yards this season, while Milivojevic has been sacked nine times and lost 55 yards on them. On Chiles’ 60 non-sack rushing attempts, he has 424 yards and six TDs.
MSU will get starting running back Makhi Frazier back after the sophomore missed the Gophers game. While the availability report is lengthy for the Spartans (3-6, 0-6 Big Ten), it is even longer for the Nittany Lions (3-6, 0-6), who have 23 players listed as out and two questionable. Both teams are on a six-game losing streak entering Saturday (3:30 p.m., CBS).
