The Spartans already had two major recruiting announcements this weekend during the second weekend of official visitors.
Now, Michigan State has earned its third commitment, and the third defensive player to commit this weekend as well. Joining Shyne Parham and Henry Sakalas is Lawrence Kanneh.
If you're unfamiliar with Kanneh, pay close attention in 2027 because he looks like the type of player who could make his mark early and often against Big Ten foes.
Kanneh is a 6-foot-3 edge rusher, weighing in at 220 pounds and hailing from Columbus, Ohio. The three-star recruit carries an 87 rating from 247Sports, which is good enough to rank him as the No. 34 prospect in the state of Ohio and the No. 65 edge recruit in the nation.
It's another huge addition for defensive line coach Winston DeLattiboudere, defensive coordinator Joe Rossi, and new head coach Pat Fitzgerald. All three men played a major role in securing Kanneh's commitment.
The most impressive thing when watching Kanneh is his speed. His ability to explode off the line gives him an immediate advantage over blockers. Once Kanneh gets off the snap, you often see him utilize a strong swim move while taking advantage of outside leverage to bend around offensive linemen. From there, he transitions from blocker to quarterback like an unidentified flying object that just got identified.
The Spartans continue to put a major emphasis on the defensive side of the ball, specifically by hyper-focusing on the defensive line.
Commitments from defensive linemen such as Ohimai Ozolua, Michigan State's highest-rated 2027 commit so far, along with Jack Schuler and now Lawrence Kanneh, continue to reinforce the vision that has circulated since the moment Pat Fitzgerald took over the Michigan State program.
Win through the trenches offensively and defensively. Plain and simple.
If the Spartans want to compete with the upper tier of the Big Ten, they have to start by winning recruiting battles in the trenches. For years, some of the conference's powerhouse programs have been able to pick from the top prospects while Michigan State was often left fighting for what's left.
Now, that's nobody's fault but Michigan State's own. Due to the instability and struggles that surrounded the program over the past few seasons, there has understandably been some hesitation from recruits when they hear about the Green and White.
But now, Fitzgerald has the Spartans buzzing once again, and recruits are starting to take notice.
Kanneh becomes the third recruit from the second official visit weekend to give Michigan State a verbal commitment. The Spartans had to fend off programs such as Boise State, Virginia, East Carolina, and Appalachian State to land the talented edge rusher.
As Michigan State waits to see if any additional commitments follow, it feels like the avalanche is beginning to build. The Spartans are bringing in recruits who fit Fitzgerald's scheme and long-term vision, and the momentum continues to grow.
Michigan State will look to keep that momentum rolling throughout the remainder of the year and into 2027, when Spartan fans will finally get the opportunity to see these recruits up close and personal inside Spartan Stadium.
