Michigan football experienced a seismic recruiting setback on Wednesday, when five-star cornerback Joshua Dobson announced his commitment to South Carolina, choosing the Gamecocks over Michigan, Auburn, and Texas A&M during a ceremony streamed on Rivals’ YouTube channel.
Dobson, listed at 6-foot-1 and between 180 to 185 pounds, was one of the most heavily recruited defensive backs in the 2027 class. He was rated the No. 1 player in North Carolina, the No. 3 cornerback nationally, and No. 17 overall among rising seniors, according to 247Sports composite rankings. ESPN also ranked him as the No. 2 cornerback and No. 7 overall prospect in the 2027 cycle, while Rivals’ Industry Rankings placed him at No. 12 nationally.
The Cornelius, North Carolina (Hough High School) standout originally played at Catawba Ridge High School in South Carolina before transferring during his junior career. His junior season production included four tackles and one pass breakup across eight games, while also contributing offensively with three receptions for 135 yards and two touchdowns, along with a kickoff return touchdown. He also recorded a tackle and an interception during the Under Armour All-American Game.
Dobson narrowed his recruitment to the Tigers, Gamecocks, Wolverines, and Aggies after taking official visits to each program. His final official visit came to South Carolina just a week before his decision.
The Gamecocks ultimately secured his commitment amid late pushes from Michigan and Texas A&M. One factor that played a role in the decision was that South Carolina’s NIL package was reportedly higher than other competing schools. Dobson becomes a major addition for the Gamecocks, joining a 2027 class that already includes multiple top-300 pledges such as defensive tackle John Archer, running back Brayden Tyson, cornerback Kelvin Millington, and linebacker Jackson Ross.
For Michigan, Dobson had been a priority target for several months and was considered one of its top defensive back prospects in the cycle. The Wolverines still hold a strong secondary class featuring commitments from Monsanna Torbert Jr., Blake Jenkins, Darius Johnson, Tavares Harrington, and Charles Woodson Jr.
