Mississippi State quarterback Kamario Taylor has been one of college football’s breakout stars this season. The dual-threat quarterback has led the Bulldogs to an unbeaten start to the season (4-0), establishing himself as one of the most exciting prospects in the country in the process.
Former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Greg McElroy recently weighed in on the comparisons between 2011 Heisman Trophy-winning QB Cam Newton and Taylor.
Greg McElroy Makes Huge Kamario Taylor Proclamation
During Thursday’s segment of the “Big Day” show, McElroy was blown away by the evolution in Taylor’s passing game and made some huge proclamations in the quarterback’s comparison to Newton.

“This guy is ridiculous, and what’s amazing about it is that through four games this year, he’s had 1,200 yards or thereabouts, 14-2 interception ratio,” McElroy said. “Last year, he threw for 629 yards all season. The defenses that were studying him earlier in the year were trying to figure out, ‘How do we slow down this guy as a runner?’ They weren’t thinking there was gonna be this massive overnight development as a passer.
“More specifically, on the downfield throws. I think if you look, this guy, the ball jumps out of his hands. You compare him to Cam Newton. I think he’s twitchier than Cam Newton. I think he’s got better top-end speed. I don’t think he runs with quite the same power as Cam, but I think he’s got a maybe more natural release than Cam as well.”
“So, I understand the comparisons,” McElroy added. “But from a tools standpoint, you can make a case that he might be superior to Cam Newton than when he came out of Auburn 15-16 years ago.”
After a chaotic start to his college football career with the Florida Gators and Blinn College at the JUCO level, Newton had an outstanding 2010 season with Auburn.
Newton led the Tigers to the SEC Championship and BCS national title. He won the SEC Offensive Player of the Year Award and the Heisman Trophy in a landslide after amassing 2,854 passing yards on 66.1% completion, 30 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions, adding 1,473 rushing yards and 20 scores.
Taylor was a four-star talent and the No. 11 quarterback and No. 80 overall-ranked prospect in the class of 2025. He was the Bulldogs’ second-choice quarterback behind Blake Shapen last season, throwing for 629 yards and five touchdowns while adding 458 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns in limited game time.

Taylor has tallied 1,192 passing yards on 69.2% completion, 14 touchdowns and two interceptions, adding 185 rushing yards and one score for the Bulldogs this season, earning a PFN College QB Impact score of 89.6 (No. 5 in the country).
Taylor will face the sternest test of his nascent college football career when the No. 16 Mississippi State hosts the No. 7 Alabama in Week 5.
