Mike Elko's Hot Mic Gives Hilarious Look Inside Texas A&M Practice

Mike Elko had a pretty important reminder for his players during Texas A&M's latest practice.

Their head coach was wearing a microphone.

And that meant everyone was going to get a slightly different version of Elko for the day.

"I'm on the hot mic today, so I gotta be more positive with you guys," Elko joked in a behind-the-scenes video shared by Texas A&M.

He certainly tried.

"Good job, DJ. Good job, DJ. Great job, DJ."

But putting a microphone on Elko also offered an interesting glimpse into just how involved the Aggies' head coach remains on the practice field.

And he had a theory for why spending so much time around certain position groups might not have been the best career decision.

"I should have coached tight ends," Elko joked. "It's gotta be such an easier group to get going on a day-to-day. I spent all my time with the DBs and the wideouts. No wonder I got no [expletive] hair left."

There was still plenty of coaching mixed between the jokes.

"Precise execution. Precise execution," Elko told the Aggies. "Let's go. Tighten everything up."

He later reminded a player to keep his shoulders square and wasn't too impressed when another celebrated getting open without much resistance.

"When you beat the back, then you celebrate," Elko said. "When you run right down the middle of the defense and no one touch you, go give your coach a hug."

Welcome to a practice with Mike Elko.

The Aggies are two weeks away from opening their 2026 season against Missouri State on Sept. 5, and expectations in College Station look a little different than they did a year ago.

Texas A&M went 11-1 during the 2025 regular season and earned the first College Football Playoff appearance in program history.

That means Elko's third fall camp isn't about proving his rebuild can work anymore.

It's about making sure the Aggies can build on what they accomplished last season.

And if that requires a little "precise execution," plenty of individual coaching and Elko spending more time with the defensive backs and receivers … so be it.

Just don't expect him to be quite as positive once the microphone comes off.

"I'm fully protected," Elko joked. "When I'm on the mic, we good."
