Mike Norvell took over as head coach of the Florida State Seminoles in 2020. The team has one bowl win and two winning seasons during his tenure.
Norvell’s team went 2-10 in 2024 and 5-7 in 2025. This year is not off to much of a better start as the Seminoles are now 3-3 after an embarrassing 44-20 loss against Louisville on Friday. FSU jumped out to a 14-0 lead and had the ball on the 2-yard line, only to fail a fourth-down attempt. Louisville outscored them 44-6 the rest of the way.
Social media is filled with calls to fire Norvell. Yet the situation is not that simple as his buyout is reportedly $51 million. This creates a bizarre situation for the team and Norvell throughout the remainder of the 2026 season.
Mike Norvell Buyout Numbers
The head coach himself has a buyout figure of a whopping $51 million. ESPN’s Pete Thamel noted the estimated cost to fire Norvell and his entire staff would be $68 million. This becomes trickier given the school’s financial situation.
“To put it bluntly, FSU has significant financial issues,” Thamel wrote. “The athletic department is more than $430 million in debt, most of which is facility debt and there are revenue bonds in place to account for it. Still, that makes it difficult for FSU to take on more debt. It’s especially difficult for an athletic department that faces paying out up to $68 million for both Norvell and his staff.”
Florida State is ultimately an academic institution, so it makes no sense to go even further into debt over the football coaching staff. This means fans may have to accept Norvell being around for years to come. His contract runs through the 2031 season, though the buyout drops in value every year.
Florida State in a Tricky Spot as a Program
Seminoles fans got used to success under both Bobby Bowden and Jimbo Fisher. Then came two rough seasons under Willie Taggart before Norvell arrived in 2020. The fans have championship expectations, while the team itself has not been a contender since 2023.
The school could seek to raise funds to pay this buyout, but it wouldn’t suddenly lead to a national championship run in 2026. The Seminoles are already 3-3 and take on No. 4 Miami next week. Even a win in that game would not magically get the team into contention.
Keeping Norvell saves a fortune and allows him to focus on building a contender in 2027. Starting fresh with a new coach may mean most of the roster sees serious turnover, such as what was seen this year with Penn State and new head coach Matt Campbell.
Norvell did prove he can lead FSU to success in both 2022 and 2023. Though his buyout number may end up buying him more time than anything he has done in the past.
The only way this situation changes is if someone, or a group of people, comes up with $51 million.
