Mississippi Governor roasts Lane Kiffin, LSU after embarrassing loss to Ole Miss

Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves took a shot at LSU head coach Lane Kiffin on Saturday night after No. 7 LSU lost 32-24 at No. 8 Ole Miss in Kiffin’s first game back in one of the most hyped up games of the 2026 college football season.
Reeves posted his message on X. “What does a $54 million buyout for the old coach, a $91 million contract for the new coach, and a $50 million roster get you?” Reeves wrote. “An a-s whipping in Oxford, Mississippi! #HottyToddy”

What do Tate Reeves’ numbers mean?
The $54 million figure points to former LSU head coach Brian Kelly. LSU fired Kelly after a 5-3 start in 2025, and the school paid his entire $54 million buyout.
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry was angry about that buyout. But LSU then handed Kiffin a seven-year, $91 million contract, with about 80% guaranteed.
LSU falls 32-24 at Ole Miss
Ole Miss built a 24-7 halftime lead. But LSU scored 14 straight points in the third quarter and tied the game at 24 on a field goal with 11:23 left.
Rebels quarterback Trinidad Chambliss answered with a 75-yard touchdown drive. The Ferris State transfer ran 14 yards for the score, and a two-point try put the Rebels up 32-24 with 6:14 to play.
Chambliss finished 33 of 48 for 363 yards and two touchdowns. Ole Miss also outgained LSU 426-330.
LSU quarterback Sam Leavitt drove the Tigers inside the Ole Miss 10-yard line in the final two minutes. On fourth down, his pass was tipped, and defensive back Jaylon Braxton picked it off in the end zone.
The loss was Kiffin’s first at LSU, which fell to 2-1. In addition, the former Ole Miss coach is now 1-9 in true road games against Associated Press top-10 teams.
Ole Miss head coach Pete Golding played down the revenge angle. “I don’t think anybody came here to beat LSU,” Golding said. “Is it sweet? Absolutely, and we’ll enjoy it tonight for sure.”
Why are Reeves and Landry feuding?
Kiffin left Ole Miss for LSU on Nov. 30, 2025, two days after the Rebels reached a school-record 11 regular-season wins. He went 55-19 in six seasons in Oxford.
Ole Miss athletic director Keith Carter wouldn’t let Kiffin coach the Rebels in the College Football Playoff. So Golding moved up from defensive coordinator to head coach.
The two governors traded shots before Tulane played at Ole Miss in the opening round. “You don’t have to wait until next year to visit Oxford,” Reeves wrote.
Landry told Reeves to “enjoy today with the team our coach built.” Then the Louisiana governor added that he’d “see ya next year when you have to build your own.”
Ole Miss beat Tulane and later lost 31-27 to Miami in the Fiesta Bowl semifinal. Now the Rebels face Florida next week.
