STARKVILLE — Mississippi State football found its new wide receivers coach after Bush Hamdan’s nine weeks on the job.

The Bulldogs are hiring Phillp Montgomery as their wide receivers coach, according to multiple reports on March 3.

Montgomery was previously Virginia Tech’s offensive coordinator and was the interim coach after Brent Pry was fired midseason. The Hokies went 3-6 with Montgomery.

Hamdan was hired by MSU in December to replace Chad Bumphis, but left in February to be the quarterback coach in the NFL for the Miami Dolphins.

Montgomery, 54, has an extensive coaching career that includes a previous connection to MSU coach Jeff Lebby. They were both on the Baylor staff for seven seasons from 2008-14 under coach Art Briles. Lebby was first Baylor’s assistant director of football operations and then the running backs coach, while Montgomery was Baylor’s co-offensive coordinator, quarterbacks and running backs coach from 2008-11 and then the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2012-14.

Lebby and Montgomery were both at Baylor when Robert Griffin III, the 2011 Heisman Trophy winner, was the quarterback.

Montgomery left Baylor in 2015 to be Tulsa’s coach, a position he held through the 2022 season. He had a 47-53 record and reached four bowl games.

Montgomery was Auburn’s offensive coordinator in 2023 but fired after one season. He then coached one season in the UFL as co-offensive coordinator of the Birmingham Stallions before arriving at Virginia Tech.

MSU has one more opening on its coaching staff after safeties coach Matt Barnes reportedly left to be Maryland’s special teams coordinator.
