Is there anyone happier or more excited about the start of the college football season than Kansas State Wildcats coach Collin Klein?
He is more giddy than a preschooler on the first day of school. In every interview, you can hear the excitement in his voice. The day can't come any sooner. He is ready for Saturday's season opener against Nicholls Saturday at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.
It is taking him back to his playing days for the Wildcats when he starred in Manhattan. That's the type of feeling he is expecting when he walks out of the tunnel for the first time as the head man in charge.
"I'll still remember the day as a player when I ran out against North Texas for the first time in 2008," Klein said in a recent interview. "I'll remember that moment for the rest of my life and I think Sept. 5 will be the same."
And who can blame Klein for the excitement? He's given the chance to turn things around at his Alma Mater. While the Wildcats were successful under former coach Chris Klieman, it just seemed things were headed in a different direction.
Last year they finished just 6-6 in what was supposed to be a year they competed for the Big 12 championship. Quarterback Avery Johnson struggled as a junior after a promising start to his collegiate career.
Now is the time for Klein to get the program back on track.
While the Wildcats were projected to finish eighth in the conference, some are calling them one of the sleeper teams in college football. Many gambling websites have the Wildcats' odds of winning the league title right up there with the likes of the Texas Tech Red Raiders, Utah Utes and BYU Cougars, who are among the favorites.
The moment is almost here for Klein to prove he was the right choice for the job.
