Monday mayhem: Social media still questions Notre Dame missing the CFP
NCAAF College Football News, Photos, Stats, Scores, Schedule & Videos...
It wasn’t just me that still had thoughts on Notre Dame missing the College Football Playoff on Monday, plenty of others on social media still had words for what transpired.
There were some that weren’t too happy with the Irish’s decision to opt out of a bowl game, but as I thought, this wasn’t just a reactionary move by the Irish, they surely had a plan in place if this was the scenario. We’ll find out much more later today, as Notre Dame’s athletic director Pete Bevacqua will meet with the media and discuss a variety of topics.
There are some interesting theories about what will happen, and you’ll see some of them below. You’ll also see some of the best Monday reactions as many are still trying to figure out why Notre Dame wasn’t included in the 12-g team College Football Playoff.
The ACC actively was against Notre Dame
“At no time was it suggested by the ACC that Notre Dame was not a worthy candidate for inclusion in the field.” https://t.co/anuMzEoXk4pic.twitter.com/rxocOZ5OBk

Yeah, this was clearly a smear campaign by the conference, even if commissioner Jim Phillips is saying otherwise. It’s pretty sad and Bevacqua isn’t happy about it.
Notre Dame’s schedule shouldn’t be viewed as an issue
What’s crazy about the ND scheduling talk is that they only had control over 7 of their 12 games and this is how they scheduled them:
#10 Miami
#7 Texas A&M
#16 USC
Boise State (won their conference)
Navy (went 9-2, play every year)
Arkansas
PurdueNo FCS teams

Notre Dame played ranked teams from three power conferences, went on the road to the SEC and played a participant in the CFP from last year. Their exclusion has nothing to do with the opponents on the schedule.
Big if true, but is Notre Dame really leaving the ACC?
I’m told that ND has already informed ACC they are going to go through the process of exiting the conference. How soon they are able to negotiate the exit is going to be a closely watched decision process by certain full members

Honestly, I’m not even sure how this would work. Others have better breakdowns on what could happen, but at this moment, I’ll believe it when I see it.
Notre Dame wasn’t the only school opting out

While Notre Dame got the majority of the publicity for opting out of a bowl game, they weren’t alone. Multiple others have, and a nice part of being independent, not having to get a fine for staying home.
Vanderbilt and Notre Dame’s situations were completely different
1. Clark Lea is awesome. Notre Dame’s athletic director said as much today.
2. The reactions were night and day because the situations for Notre Dame and Vanderbilt were night and day.
— Pete Sampson (@PeteSampson_) December 9, 2025
Pete Sampson is one of the best on the Notre Dame beat, and he’s not wrong here. The Irish looked like they were in, and at no point did Vandy. Can’t compare apples to oranges.
The history is on Notre Dame’s side
For those who think the ND players r wrong 4 not wanting play in a bowl. The team agree to this. Know this – Ara’s 1971 team turned down a bowl game. Those guys r in their 70’s now. There is history with ND not going 2 Bowl games then going & then not going. Proud what they did.

The Big Ten Network analyst brought receipts. This isn’t uncommon for Notre Dame to skip a bowl, with a player vote as the deciding factor. They’re the ones on the field, so it makes plenty of sense to give them the choice.
Plenty of truth here for Notre Dame
FINAL THOUGHTS (all true):
-Notre Dame is a Top 5 team.
-Notre Dame did not have a Top 10 resume.
-Miami deserved to get in over ND.
-ACC is a joke conference.
-Alabama rising one spot with their last two performances was a disgrace.
-The CFP Rankings show is a VERY BAD TV show.— Brad Powers (@BradPowers7) December 8, 2025
It’s hard to disagree with this assessment, as the Irish are much better than most CFP teams, but did lack in the resume department. Head-to-head has to mean something, but not when it’s gerrymandered into existence. The reality TV show that accompanied it was terrible.
A very interesting scenario for Notre Dame the SEC and the Big Ten
NEW: If Notre Dame is really that mad at the ACC, it should call the Big Ten or the SEC, @AndyStaples writes👀
1️⃣ Could Notre Dame’s general counsel determine the ACC’s alleged politicking for Miami gives Notre Dame legal grounds to break its agreement?
2️⃣ Propose moving all… pic.twitter.com/jKD5X2udlO
— On3 (@On3sports) December 8, 2025
The SEC has already made it know that they’ll start scheduling more games against the Irish, with a home-and-home series with Auburn starting in 2027, Alabama in 2029, Florida in 2031 according to FBSchedules.com. You’d have to expect more would be on the way, but adding the Big Ten into this equation makes tons of sense.
Notre Dame is in the traditional footprint of the conference, has natural rivalries with schools like Michigan, Ohio State, Purdue, Indiana, Michigan State, Penn State and others. This could lead to playing more Big Ten opponents as well, and then there’d be absolutely no questions about the schedule.
