The University of Montana football team is set for an FCS quarterfinal game as it hosts the University of South Dakota on Saturday, Dec. 13, at Washington-Grizzly Stadium in Missoula.

The No. 3 Grizzlies (12-1) dispatched with South Dakota State last weekend to move on in the postseason, while the No. 11 Coyotes (10-4) blanked No. 6 Mercer 47-0 in the second round.

A Montana win could potentially set up a second “Brawl of the Wild” matchup this season, as the winner moves on to face the victor of Montana State vs. Stephen F. Austin in the semifinals.

Semifinal berth up for grabs in Missoula

The Grizzlies are looking to make the FCS semifinals for the second time in three years and the sixth time overall under head coach Bobby Hauck.

Montana had a huge day offensively in the second-round victory over South Dakota State last Saturday as it racked up 552 total yards in the 50-29 win.

Quarterback Keali'i Ah Yat passed for a career-high 360 yards, according to UM Sports Information, and four touchdowns, with two going to Stevie Rocker Jr.

Michael Wortham added a touchdown grab and eight catches for 122 yards, while Big Sky Offensive MVP Eli Gillman found pay dirt twice with 135 yards on 24 carries.

South Dakota finished second in the Missouri Valley Football Conference to the country’s No. 1 overall seed North Dakota State, which was upset 29-28 by Illinois State last weekend.

L.J. Phillips Jr. rushed for 159 yards and two scores and Carson Fletcher went for 110 as the Coyotes won their fifth game in a row. Two receivers also broke the century mark for South Dakota as Tysen Boze caught two passes for 108 yards and Larenzo Fenner snagged four for 100 yards from quarterback Aidan Bouman in the road win.

The Coyotes defense picked off four passes against Mercer as it surrendered just 277 yards of offense.

Phillips Jr. earned first-team All-MVFC honors this season as he ranked top 10 in rushing yards and touchdowns nationally in the regular season, per USD Sports Information.

The tailback has over 1,800 yards and 18 touchdowns through 14 games, averaging over 131 yards on the ground per game and had a 301-yard performance against Northern Colorado earlier this year.
