Nov. 1—MORGANTOWN — Entering the latest edition of the Mohawk Bowl on Friday night, the University football team averaged just under 42 points per contest through nine games of the 2025 season.
Unfortunately for the Hawks, the Morgantown defense was all trick and no treat on Halloween as the Mohigans shut down the UHS offense en route to a 21-0 victory in the 2025 Mohawk Bowl.
"How about that defense ? They did a great job tonight, " MHS head coach Sean Biser said. "Like we always say, you have to play complementary football, and we had a great team effort tonight. We kept getting shot down, but I thought our kids played really hard, and they just kept playing."
University only gained 149 yards of total offense in the contest, as MHS denied basically everything its opponents attempted. Offensively, the Mohigans established the ground game early with quarterback Maddoz Twigg and running back Isaiah Thompson. The duo combined for 177 yards on 44 carries.
Twigg tallied 111 yards on 20 rushes, with Thompson earning 66 yards on 22 attempts and the opening touchdown of the game. Zaiiden Lockett did his part with five carries for 49 yards and a pair of touchdowns (one rushing and one receiving), with Carter Cooper finishing with four rushes for 30 yards.
UHS quarterback Harrison Helbig completed 13 of his 26 passing attempts for 95 yards and one interception, as the Mohigans' defensive line caused issues all night for the Hawks in the backfield.
"We didn't play our game tonight, " UHS head coach Eric Snyder said. "And take nothing away from their (MHS) defense, they played a phenomenal game, but we made some mistakes and couldn't overcome them. They were prepared well for the game, and we have our bye week ahead to learn from our mistakes and make sure we are ready to go come playoff time."
Thompson opened the scoring with the only touchdown of the first half by either team on the opening drive of the game. The Mohigans didn't attempt a pass and ran four minutes off the clock before the UHS offense touched the field, and Thompson went 23 yards to the house.
The rivals then went scoreless for the rest of the first half. MHS seemed to go ahead by two scores in the second quarter on a punt return by Cooper that went for six, but a penalty negated the play.
UHS opened the second half on offense but quickly went three-and-out and punted. Twigg then found Owen Young downfield for a massive touchdown, but the play was called back for an ineligible player downfield.
Two plays later, UHS sent the house on a blitz, and Twigg quickly found Lockett on a screen pass. The senior did the rest, escaping multiple defenders on his way to a 54-yard touchdown and extending the lead to 14-0.
UHS managed a positive drive offensively that started on its own 9-yard line, but stalled at midfield, and the hosts punted once again.
With just under 90 seconds left in the third, UHS senior Kyle Weaver came up with an interception at the MHS 33. The Hawks moved the ball into the red zone to the 13, but the Mohigans' defense slammed the door on fourth down to earn the ball back, leading by two possessions in the fourth quarter.
Sixty seconds ran off the clock before the Hawks found another interception in MHS territory, this time as Glenn Brown took the ball away and set his offense up in a favorable position once again.
But as they'd done previously, the Mohigans stood firm on defense and earned another stop on fourth down in the red zone.
MHS took back over on its own 15 but punted after a three-and-out. However, Brown muffed the punt, and it was recovered by a member of the MHS punt team at midfield.
Lockett then scored his second touchdown of the night with a 37-yard scamper, icing the game for the Mohigans, who went on to earn a 21-0 victory.
"Our plan was to tackle and play fundamentally sound football, " Biser said. "I have the best coaching staff in the state, and these guys do a fantastic job. Our kids buy into what we ask of them and play hard. At times we weren't syncing tonight, but that run game is always there when you need it."
Morgantown will conclude the 2025 regular season next week against Musselman at home, while the Hawks finish 7-3 and now await the 2025 postseason with a bye in the final week.
