Football Tier Rankings
Chris Murray takes a look at the football tier rankings in the 2026 versions of the Mountain West, as well as the PAC-12. For the MW portion, UNLV ranks at the top, with Air Force joining them in the top tier. The next one is New Mexico and Hawaii, followed by SJSU and NIU. Wyoming and Nevada are in the fourth tier with UTEP in a class by itself at the bottom. On the PAC side, it’s Boise State at the top, with Fresno State, SDSU, and Washington in that next group. Utah State, Oregon State, and Colorado State follow them, with Texas State bringing up the rear.
Names to watch for Boise State’s WR coach.
Things move fast in the coaching world, as one of these names has already been hired somewhere else. But looking over the names, there are some with Boise State ties and some with none. George Hicks would be the internal hire as the current assistant WR coach, while Davis Koetter would be a young coach with BSU ties. As far as external candidates, Billy Ray Stutzman of SJSU figures to be a popular name, and Mike Rigell of Northern Colorado would be another hire with a strong resume, although a lot of stops over the years. Note, these are not reported names, but names that could potentially be good fits.
The case for meaningless bowl games.
The Athletic pushes back on the bowl games are meaningless narrative. They cite the fan experience and how the stakes make things fun and meaningful. However, bowl games provide a balance to all of that, games for the sake of being games wrapped up in the hoopla of an exhibition bowl. Life goes on after sports, and meaningless bowl games help bridge that gap. People watch them even if they aren’t emotionally invested as other games.
