Class of 2022 Athletes Eligible for 2026

In an 11th-hour ruling that is bound to create chaos, a Colorado U.S. District Court judge has ruled that athletes from the class of 2022 should be eligible for a 5th athletic season, meaning they can play in 2026-2027. Whether or not they should be allowed is a fair debate, but not for July 31st. Teams, some who have already begun fall camp, now may court veteran players, and young athletes may find themselves roster crunch victims.

The NCAA is already appealing this decision, which will be interesting with the start of the season so close.

Save College Sports Act gets big support.

It sounds like the SEC and Big Ten have come around to the Save College Sports Act, which means they were able to get some things they wanted in the revisions. It sounds like conversations with the President helped sway things for the two conferences, and it led to changes in the language to the bill intended to strengthen a provision that prohibits schools from circumventing the athlete revenue-share cap. Hopefully everyone can see the irony there, but maybe they can’t. Either way, it’s a win for those hoping to see a hard cap when it comes to sharing revenue with athletes.

Hawaii Preview

In another College Football News Preview, we look at the Rainbow Warriors, who are looking to build off of last year’s success. The offense should continue to roll with Micah Alejado and a room full of wide receivers who will pile up the yards in their scheme, but when they rush for over 95 yards, they are underdefeated. Health is a concern, as they can’t afford to lose Alejado or any more WRs. On defense, the d-line is expereinced and big, which will bode well and the linebackers should be pretty good. However, there are many new faces and they need to find a way to increase interceptions. CFN sees Hawaii ending up 9-3 despite a challenging schedule, which would be great.

UTEP’s path to the Mountain West

The Miners were actually the original target in Mountain West expansion (not counting Hawaii, who was already an affiliate member). AD Jim Senter’s work can be seen in most facets of UTEP’s athetic department, improving all he can as they move to the MW, but the most important was fundraising for the two years they’d be without conference revenue from the CUSA. They pulled in a record $12 million during the 2024-25 year, which has raised the budgets of their core sports. Now, the work for UTEP is start producing on the field.
