Michigan State football has added an experienced linebacker to its defense through the transfer portal.
NC State transfer linebacker Kenny Soares Jr. has reportedly committed to Michigan State, according to On3 and 247Sports. The report of Soares' commitment to Michigan State via the portal came out on Tuesday morning.
Soares played three seasons at Northwestern before transferring to NC State ahead of this last season. In 2025, Soares appeared in all 13 games where he recorded 80 tackles, two passes defended and one fumble recovery. In his three seasons with Northwestern from 2022 to 2024, Soares appeared in 28 games — recording 57 tackles, 2.5 sacks, three passes defended and one fumble recovery.
Soares comes to Michigan State with one year of eligibility remaining and a ton of experience on his resume. He also has clear ties to new Spartans head coach Pat Fitzgerald, who was at Northwestern up until the summer of 2023.
