New Michigan State football head coach Pat Fitzgerald will have more money to work with than Jonathan Smith when it comes to his assistant coaches salary pool.

Fitzgerald was officially approved by the board of trustees as the next Michigan State football head coach on Friday, with there also being an interesting update on his assistant coaches salary pool. Per Stephen Brooks of 247Sports, Fitzgerald will have $12.12 million to work with to form his coaching staff. That is roughly $1.3 million more than what Smith had initially when he signed his contract with the Spartans.

Additionally, it was reported by Brooks that Fitzgerald’s assistant coaches and assistant strength coaches can’t be on deals longer than two years, while his coordinators and head strength coach can be on three-year deals with approval from athletic director J Batt. This is an interesting update as it provides some insight to how long assistant coaches will initially plan to be on the Spartans’ staff.

Fitzgerald is still working through the process of hiring his assistant coaches and fill out his staff. There have been some notable hirings so far, including the retention of defensive coordinator Joe Rossi and poaching of former Spartans legend Max Bullough from Notre Dame. Bullough will serve as the co-defensive coordinator with Rossi and also the linebackers coach.

Having more money to work with to build out your staff is certainly a positive step forward for Fitzgerald and the Spartans. This certainly can help in luring more attractive coaching options to Michigan State, and the better the coaching staff, the better the results on the field.
