Could Michigan State football be working to flip a top 300 prospect with family ties to the Spartans' program?

Jason Killop, a recruiting insider for On3, reported on Monday that Michigan State hosted four-star linebacker Amarri Irvin — son of Spartans legend running back Sedrick Irvin Sr. — this past weekend. This is a notable development considering that there were no recent reports of Michigan State making a push for Irvin.

Irvin is currently committed to Notre Dame. He committed to the Fighting Irish last November, which was also when now Michigan State co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Max Bullough was the linebackers coach at Notre Dame.

Irvin has a recruiting rating of 90.90 in 247Sports' composite system. He ranks as the No. 23 linebacker and No. 286 overall prospect in the 2027 class.

Michigan State extended an offer to Irvin in early January, and is one 25 schools to offer him, according to 247Sports. He also holds notable offers from Notre Dame, Michigan, Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisville, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Texas and SMU.

While Irvin is still committed to Notre Dame, this news from Killop of him visiting this past weekend is very interesting. There are clear connections between Michigan State and Irvin through his father and Bullough, and you don't often see a committed prospect visit another school unless there's true interest there. Now, can Michigan State flip him away from a more established program like Notre Dame? That's the challenge at hand, but it's definitely something we should be monitoring moving forward to see if anything else comes out of this story.
