It’s another week of the Recruiting Roundup.

As the season draws closer, recruiting remains at a standstill. The focus is clearly on the impending season. There were two lone offers and no known commitments, but there was a decommit this week. As UTEP was one of the teams with an offer, they are featured on the cover photo.

But the impending start of the season is a good time to take a look at each team’s staff list to see how many recruiting staff they employ.

It was about 15 years ago when many coaching staffs would designate one of the assistant coaches to be the “recruiting coordinator.” Now, teams have multiple recruiting staff who solely focus on recruiting, and in recent years, General Managers have emerged.

It’s important to remember that titles often don’t tell the entire story. Staff at different schools with different titles likely have similar job responsibilities. Scanning through these lists can be a bit fun to see what titles and roles each school has. But perhaps the more important thing to notice is how many recruiting staff are listed at each school (while also remembering some recruiting GAs or other staff are not listed).

For instance, Colorado State and San Diego State employ eight different staff who have their hands in recruiting. On the other end of the spectrum, Northern Illinois has one lone position listed.

Note that more or less staff doesn’t necessarily mean better or worse results either. Boise State, for example, only has three staff listed on their site, but recruits well on an annual basis. Other teams may place lower in the recruiting rankings with larger recruiting staff.

Recruiting Calendar:

Starting tomorrow and going through the rest of the summer, we are now in a dead period. All in-person contact of any kind is off-limits. But that doesn’t mean recruiting stops; it just slows down as coaches focus on the start of the season. As always, it is okay for texts, calls, and DMs.

Next College Student Athlete says:

The most restrictive of all the recruiting periods is the NCAA Dead Period. During the dead period, coaches may not have any in-person contact with recruits and/or their parents. In other words, coaches are not allowed to talk to recruits at their college campus, the athlete’s school, an athletic camp or even the grocery store.

While the term “dead period” makes it seem like all recruiting stops during this time, that’s actually not the case. Athletes and coaches are still allowed to communicate via phone, email, social media and other digital communication channels. While NCAA Division 1 programs are prohibited from conducting any in-person recruiting, D1 college coaches can still contact student-athletes via digital forms of communication during the dead period.
