Rivals national recruiting analyst Greg Smith made a big-time prediction for the Penn State Nittany Lions this week.
Smith “called his shot” on several top recruiting battles, and he has Penn State landing 2027 four-star athlete Cooper Ohnmacht.
“This is a recruitment that felt like Iowa State was going to win pretty easily when coach Matt Campbell and his staff were in Ames,” wrote Smith. “Now that the staff is at Penn State it’s trending towards the Kansas native ending up there. Ohnmacht was very excited about being offered by Penn State when we spoke last…It’s going to be tough to beat the Nittany Lions here.”
Ohnmacht, 6-foot/185 pounds from Great Bend, KS, is rated by 247Sports as the No. 11 athlete in the nation and the No. 1 player in the state of Kansas. He is also rated as the No. 240 overall player in the 2027 recruiting class.
Kansas State, Vanderbilt, and Virginia Tech are among the other schools in the mix for the four-star recruit.
What position is Cooper Ohnmacht expected to play in college?
Ohnmacht, who reportedly runs the 40-yard dash in the 4.5 range, could play either wide receiver or safety at the next level.
Penn State, however, appears to be recruiting the talented athlete as a safety (Nittany Lions secondary coach Deon Broomfield is leading the charge in Ohnmacht’s recruitment).
“The Penn State staff sees Ohnmacht as a defensive back for them in their defense,” noted Smith in December. “The four-star also has some schools that want him on offense and some on defense.”
It would be a surprise at this point if Ohnmacht doesn’t end up landing with Penn State.
The Nittany Lions don’t currently have any players committed to their 2027 recruiting class, but that should be changing in the not-too-distant future.
