NCAA blocks Colorado-Syracuse joint spring game again

Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders and Syracuse head coach Fran Brown attempted to once again play each other this spring in a new version of the traditional spring game. The NCAA rejected the premise for the second year in a row, according to a USA TODAY Sports report by Brent Schrotenboer.

Last year, the NCAA's oversight committee cited the timing of the request, which did not come from either school until March, saying that other programs that had already started spring practices would not have had the same opportunity. Even with that request coming a month earlier this year, Syracuse and Colorado were shut down again, but Schrotenboer reports it was for a different reason this time around.

"'Circumstances do not warrant relief of the legislation,' which currently prohibits joint spring practices, according to the written NCAA rationale for denying the request."

Despite the denial, which Colorado won't appeal, the committee "is currently reviewing the whole football calendar for possible changes, including spring football practice."

That is promising news for Colorado, Syracuse, and other programs that have their eyes set on revamping spring football.

Colorado begins official spring practices on March 2, but has not set a date for a spring football game. After this week's ruling nixing the joint game, a CU spring game announcement could come as early as this week.
