Even though former Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby decided to leave the school, there appears to be some lingering issues regarding the situation. The Big 12 conference has yet to drop litigation against Texas Tech, per a NBC Sports report.
Sorsby was at the center of an eligibility probe by the NCAA. The quarterback, who has since planned to enter the NFL supplemental draft, admitted to gambling on his team’s games in the past. That caused the NCAA to rule he would be ineligible to play college football in 2026.
A judge in Texas overruled the NCAA. The judge ruled instead that Sorsby would be eligible. This set off a firestorm in college football, with schools threatening to boycott games against Texas Tech. The Big 12 also sued to stop Sorsby from playing.
The Big 12’s top officials plan to meet with member schools in the coming days, to discuss next steps.
“We don’t know the answer to those questions,” an anonymous Big 12 source said, per ESPN. “We haven’t done anything different at this point. We’re going to reconvene next week to run through all the options. Right now that case is still active.”
One issue reportedly on the table is for the Big 12 to sanction Texas Tech in some way.
“There may need to be consequences for Texas Tech, even if it works out this way,” an unnamed Big 12 athletic director said. “It was pointed out there’s been legal fees involved in this action. Is it right for all 16 schools to share in those legal fees when we didn’t have anything to do with starting it? Those are some of the things that are going to have to be worked out and they will be.”
Texas Tech is currently one of the strongest football programs in the Big 12. The Red Raiders made the College Football Playoff during the 2025 season.
