Nebraska coach Matt Rhule has been impressed with freshman defensive back Danny Odem during spring workouts. He talked about the rising freshman cornerback during his availability with the media on Wednesday.

Odem is one of the crown jewels of the 2026 class. The former five-star recruit was the second five-star signing in three seasons, joining the quarterback Dylan Raiola with that distinction.

Now, he is more than just a heralded recruit. Rhule indicated that Odem is doing much more than just sitting on the bench waiting for his turn, as transcribed by Husker247's Michael Bruntz.

"Danny is really talented. He's a big player for a freshman. He's competing to play. We didn't bring him here to sit. He's humble, he works really hard, he's a gym rat and then when he goes out there he likes to compete. He's certainly a guy who is in the mix."

It would be bold to expect the freshman to be able to start right away. Donovan Jones and Andrew Marshall are in mind to headline the position for new defensive coordinator Rob Aurich. The program also has ample depth as well. Even still, it sounds like the freshman is in line to make some noise.
