Nebraska football coach Matt Rhule met with the media on Monday and discussed running back Emmett Johnson's performance this season. The coach went as far as to say that he believes Johnson should be a serious candidate for the Heisman Trophy.
It's hard not to include Johnson in the conversation, at least. He is coming off a game against the UCLA Bruins on Saturday that saw him tally 28 carries for 129 yards and a touchdown. It was his fifth game of over 100 rushing yards, as the Huskers were able to come away with a 28-21 victory.
Rhule believes that Johnson deserves an invite to New York, as he told the media.
"I personally believe Emmett Johnson should be in New York as a Heisman candidate. I think he should be a Doak Walker finalist if not winner and I think what he’s doing is fantastic. I hope people appreciate seeing him. He’s a First-Team All-American."
The running back has put up the numbers to back that vocal support. He ranks second in the FBS in rushing yards with 1,131 yards and fifth in yards per game with an average of 113.1 yards.
The Nebraska Cornhuskers (7-3, 4-3) retake the field on Saturday, Nov. 22, when they travel to Pennsylvania to face the Penn State Nittany Lions (3-6, 0-6) in Happy Valley. The kickoff time and TV network have not yet been determined.
