Nebraska's entire 2026 season could swing on a brutal November stretch.
By the time the Huskers reach their Friday night road game at Illinois on Nov. 6, Matt Rhule’s team may already be emotionally drained from one of the biggest home games of his tenure.
That is why CBS Sports college football analyst Brad Crawford sees the trip to Gies Memorial Stadium in Champaign as a dangerous trap spot.
The timing is rough. Nebraska hosts Washington on Halloween, a game that could represent a massive opportunity for Rhule to secure his first win over a ranked opponent with the Huskers. If Nebraska wins, the program’s momentum could surge. If Nebraska loses, the emotional toll could be just as heavy.
Either way, turning around six days later for a Friday night road game is a difficult assignment.
“The numbers speak for themselves,” Crawford wrote. “College football teams playing at home on Friday nights win at an extremely high rate, and this one has all the makings of a dangerous spot for the Huskers.”

Friday night games are weird by design. Preparation time is shortened, travel routines change and home crowds tend to treat the standalone stage like a major event. Illinois is in a similar tier as the Cornhuskers, but it may not have Nebraska’s overall brand power; Illinois enters the season having lost just twice at home the last two seasons, as it'll attempt to maintain its surging momentum under Bret Bielema.
For Nebraska, the biggest concern is what comes before and after. Washington brings the chance for a statement. Ohio State and Iowa still loom later in November. That leaves Illinois sitting in the middle as the kind of game a bowl-hopeful team absolutely cannot afford to lose.
“After hosting Washington on Halloween with a chance to earn this coaching staff’s first win over a ranked opponent, all that momentum could come crashing down at Gies Memorial Stadium,” Crawford wrote. “Even worse, Nebraska could be fighting for bowl eligibility with Ohio State and Iowa still looming.”
That final piece is what makes the matchup so important. Nebraska’s margin for error is not large enough to casually drop winnable games. If the Huskers are sitting near the bowl line, a slip against Illinois could turn an already stressful November into a full-blown crisis.

Rhule has spent his Nebraska tenure trying to turn competitive stretches into actual wins. This is the type of game that reveals whether the Huskers are ready to do that consistently. Handle Illinois, and Nebraska keeps moving. Lose there, and the season could start unraveling fast.
